United States Shows Surge In Businesses Run By Minority Women

The 2007-2012 census shows the number of businesses owned by minority women in the United States has grown by a healthy rate. Overall, women-led companies increased by nearly 28 percent.

Businesses owned by Hispanic women increased by 87 percent, and businesses owbed by black women saw a 68 percent increase. The number of businesses owned by Asian women jumped by 44 percent.

While this is good news, it isn’t all positive.  The years covered by the census included the economic downturn.  The total number of companies in the U.S. remained stagnant at 27.6 million between 2007 and 2012. It is possible that the spike in women-run businesses stemmed from the fact that many women lost their jobs.
