8 Secret Mood-Boosting, Weight-Loss Foods

Psst! Over here! Add these superfoods to your diet and watch your mood go up while your weight goes down

If we asked you to conjure up an image of a person on a diet, what would you envision? Very likely, someone who is unhappy, moody, and — most likely — really, really hungry. Is that close?

Feeling hungry is an established sign of an ineffective diet, since starving yourself slows your metabolism and teaches your body to store fat, instead of burning it. But as Stephen Perrine and Heather Hurlock reveal in their book, The New American Diet, being unhappy might also be a sign that your diet isn’t working. In fact, many of the nutrients most closely linked to weight loss have also been linked strongly to mood. A prime example is the B vitamin folate. Found in leafy green vegetables, it plays a key role in the production and maintenance of new cells in your body — including those in your brain. Omega-3 fatty acids play much the same role, protecting us from both depression and obesity.

Fortunately, there’s an easy way to boost your mood and burn more calories — and it’s all about eating more food! Flip through the slideshow above for suggestions on how to make these superfoods a part of your daily regimen.

Yum. But it’s hard to find grass-fed beef here. When I lived in South America, that was the staple and it does have a different taste from grain-fed beef. I found it “gamier,” but quite good.

I need food to gain weight, not lose weight.  I never broke 100 lbs, in my life.
