Most advice on this topic mixes two different problems together: getting more out of an AC that works, and fixing one that does not. They need opposite responses, and trying the first on a car that needs the second just wastes a hot afternoon.

Quick ways to make the AC colder right now
Four changes to how you use the system make an immediate difference and cost nothing. The order matters more than people expect, because starting on recirculate in a car full of superheated air just recirculates that air. Vent first, then seal up.
- Vent the trapped hot air before you close up. Open the windows for the first minute of driving, or open two doors and fan one before you get in. The DOE recommends exactly this, noting that letting hot air out of the cabin first puts less demand on the AC and helps the vehicle cool faster.

Replace it rather than cleaning it, since the media is not designed to be washed and a damp filter grows its own problems.
- Clear the condenser. The condenser sits ahead of the radiator and sheds the heat the system collects, so leaves, bugs and road grime across its fins directly reduce cooling. Rinse it gently from the engine side outward with a low-pressure hose, and never with a pressure washer, which flattens the fins.

The refrigerant point deserves being clear about, because a lot of advice online is not. Reduce the heat load on the car
Every degree of heat you keep out is a degree the AC does not have to remove, and this is where the largest gains hide. A car that starts at a bearable temperature reaches comfortable far sooner than one that starts at oven temperature, no matter how good the AC is.
- Park in shade or a garage whenever the choice exists. The DOE lists shade and a windshield sunshade as its first two hot-weather recommendations for exactly this reason.
- Use a windshield sunshade. The windshield is the largest glass area and the one pointed at the sky, so it does the most heating.

- Think about where the sun will be later. Shade at 9am is often full sun by 2pm, which is when you actually come back to the car.
