A cooling system is sealed and pressurized so the coolant can run above its normal boiling point, and releasing that pressure while everything is hot lets superheated coolant flash to steam and come out of the opening.

Manufacturers are blunt about this. Ford’s owner’s manual guidance states that you should never remove the coolant reservoir cap while the engine is running or hot, because steam and hot liquid can come out forcefully.

Caution: lukewarm is not cool enough. If the cap or the upper radiator hose is warm to the touch at all, the system still holds pressure. When it is genuinely cold, open the cap slowly with a cloth over it and stop if you hear any hiss.

Check the overflow reservoir instead while you wait, since it is not pressurized and most cars let you read the level through the plastic without opening anything. Vent before you cool. Drive with the windows down for the first minute or two, or open the doors briefly before setting off, so the worst of the trapped air leaves on its own rather than through the AC. Then close up and let the system work.
