How to fix an overfilled engine

Correcting an overfill means removing oil until the level sits at the full mark, and there are two ways to do it. Neither requires a full oil change, and neither needs a new filter, despite what a lot of advice on this topic says. Work on a cold engine so the oil is not hot enough to burn you.

  1. Confirm the level first. Park level, engine cold or shut off for at least 15 minutes, then wipe, reinsert and read the dipstick. Note roughly how far above the mark it sits before removing anything.
  2. Extract through the dipstick tube, if you can. A manual oil extractor draws oil up the dipstick tube with a hand pump and needs no jacking and no tools underneath. This is the method to prefer, because it removes small amounts in a controlled way.
  3. Or crack the drain plug briefly. With the car safely supported, loosen the drain plug just enough to let a small amount out into a pan, then close it. Oil comes out faster than expected, so take less than you think you need.
  4. Recheck and repeat. Wait a few minutes for drain-back, read the dipstick again, and remove a little more if needed. Sneaking up on the mark beats overshooting into the opposite problem.
