Check your oil first

Check the oil level before you investigate anything else, because low oil is both one of the most common causes of engine ticking and the one that does damage fastest. Oil keeps the valvetrain cushioned on a film of pressurised fluid, and when the level or pressure drops, those parts make contact and tick. The noise is the warning, and it arrives before the damage does.

Chevrolet’s guidance for an “Oil Pressure Low, Stop Engine” alert is to bring the vehicle safely to a stop and not restart it, because running an engine without oil pressure damages it. Normal ticking: injectors and minor sources

Some ticking is the engine working correctly. The exhaust manifold case deserves more than a table row, because it carries a risk the noise alone does not suggest. An exhaust leak upstream of the cabin can put exhaust gas where you breathe it, and the CDC advises having a mechanic check your exhaust system every year, noting that a small leak can lead to a buildup of carbon monoxide inside the car. CO is odorless and its symptoms are flu-like, so you would not necessarily connect a headache on a long drive with the tick.
